but the key will not operate the locks on either side since the battery is dead. Any ideas?
Thanks this worked.

Apparenlty, lots of people have trouble getting into that car with a dead battery. They detail how to unlock it a couple ways, from the factory emergency unlock proceedure to running current to the trunk light socket in order to wake up the power locks. Good luck.

If you insert the key physically into the keyhole of the door and turn it to open the door, it should still open the door lock mechanically even if you have a dead battery.
Not unless the key cylinder and/or lock opening mechanism
(like levers, etc.) are bad. Both front doors not opening to
mechanical efforts by the key to open the door is a very rare
happening.

Because the BMW is more secure, even before ‘double locking’, than the standard car you cannot simply use the key.
But you can with this procedure:
Insert the key (try driver’s side first but you may have to use passenger door). Lift door handle as high as it will go. Now turn the key to unlock the door. You will need to go past the horizontal position and it may stick a bit.
That’s it.
