I’ve just had an arguement with my mate as to what engines are used in the new MINI.?

by Reed on December 13, 2009

I know MINI are now owned by BMW after their purchase from Rover but my mate seems to think that all new MINI’s have BMW engines in them. Can someone please confirm that although they are owned by BMW, MINI are in fact their own company and as such make their own engines, chassis and other parts and only use BMW for funding and design ability.

Theyve got beemer engines mate..

They do not have BMW engines, but they do use some parts from BMW.
BMW does not make an engine that small.
Most of the Mini is made by Mini. BMW just provided the money.

Official answer: it’s technically an independent engine, though it has its roots in BMW ownership.

The pre-2007 Mini Cooper use the "Tritec" engine, which comes in the 1.4 and 1.6L versions (there’s also the supercharged version for the Cooper S). Tritec was a joint venture between Chrysler and the Rover Group (a division of BMW, at least in 1997). The engines were built in Brazil, but designed by Chrysler (based on the 2.0L engine used in the Neon)

The 2007 and later Mini Cooper use a new engine that’s a co-product between BMW and Peugeot in Europe, and is built in both France and England. Engine design was by BMW, and reported includes BMW valvetronic system. The 1.6L Turbo version will feature direct fuel injection as well.

So "technically" your mate is right, the new Mini Mk 2’s have what are essentially BMW engines.

But to put the cat among the pigeons, I heard that the Diesel engines are supplied by Toyota, as BMW did not make a small enough Diesel to fit in the Mini. There has always been some inter make supplying from the outset in car manufacturing.

In the latest Minis Peuguot engines both petrol and diesel, there may have been some BMW input, but they are the same engines as in various Citroens and Peuguots of similar capacity. Previously a Chrysler petrol and Toyota diesel were used. No "BMW" Minis have EVER had a BMW engine!
