Is a BMW 318I a good used car to buy?

by Reed on December 13, 2009

I’m a student and I have 5000-6000$ to buy my first car.I’ve been looking for a while for a good car and I’ve come down to the BMW 318I.I live in Canada and I might get this car at the 200 000 km mark.I know that owning a car with the much km isn’t safe but I only want to keep this car for 5 years max.I know that having a BMW I should expect to pay heavy money to repair some parts but I’m ready to pay the price.I just want to know if this car isn’t going to die on me,is this a reaible car?

Thanks!

Any car with that much mileage (uh…km-age?) is a bit of a crap shoot. If it’s been properly maintained it’s got a better chance of lasting longer, but there’s no guarantees. BMWs are not known to be exceptionally reliable (I’m basing this on Consumer Reports), but how long the particular car you’re looking at will last (out of countless thousands that were built) is subject to a certain amount of random chance which might work for or against your favor.

If you really want it and are okay with the possibility of expensive repairs, go for it.

If you are more concerned about reliability — what car will last me the most miles with minimum repairs (or more accurately, which car is most LIKELY to) — you are better off getting a Honda or Toyota will less miles.

I have owned 3 BMW’s and they can be great, but used ones are costly. As they age, they need more work. Take it to a mechanic to check out before buying. Remember some mechanics love them cause they make more money repairing them! I switched to a Japenese car even tho I still prefer European cars for their looks. Good luck.

BMW 318 is a very nice car
but 1800 is not enough for it
also it will cost you money & time as the 1.8 engin breaks frequently.
The problem that most of the bmr owners tend to push it too hard so I’m sure your car will be already wasted
take my advice go for a relaiable car rather than the good looks the BMW have, escpecially you are saying that you need it for 5 years!!!!
come on man 5 years are a long time you need a low mileage & a japanees car that can make your life easier for 5 years
The problem that we all have the dream of owning the BMW 3rd serious but since this is your 1st car please take it easy & wait till you can afford to get a decent BMW

Yes, it is a realible car.If your budget is $6000,why dont you try Canadian seized car online auction? I am sure you get get a better BMW 318I for $6000.Maybe 20000 km.Every day, the government confiscates, seizes and repossesses thousands of Vehicles. These vehicles are usually typically listed at 90% OFF their original value and auctions usually start at $100.You can check out this site:
