Car seems fine when driving no obvious reason for light coming on can anyone help
What year of car?
What’s the specific problem: You have a warning light on (if so, which one), or you believe there’s a problem with the engine’s exhaust valves or with the emissions system? Which one, and why?

since it’s a 318…I’m guessing it’s rather old…either way, I’d highly doubt your exhaust valves are deteriorating…the vavle seals however may be bad, or the head gasket may be the culprit. Either way, very expensive, very time consuming and something the average shade tree mechanic either won’t do or won’t want to attempt. Might be time to look for a newer Bimmer.

Dilyox, I wish you would have said which light came on. However, you have said yourself, "exhaust emissions valves deteriorated". Even the most minute leak in the exhaust system can cause the yellow "exhaust system warning" light to indicate. Remember, your exhaust system runs right the way from the engine to rear of the car. That’s an awful lot of pipe work. My advice would be to check the entire system by checking under the car. Look for rust and tiny holes in the system. If you do find them then they need to be dealt by a BMW specialist or at the very least a BMW independent specialist. Good Luck.
