What is wrong with the exhaust (?) on my 1996 BMW 328i?

by Reed on December 8, 2009

I don’t think it’s a dual exhaust but there are two tailpipes (side by side) and exhaust only flows from one of the pipes. The car is running okay but shakes a bit while standing and when not pressing the accelerator while moving.

Thanks for your tips

Good stuff from Ryan here. My ‘95 325ci does the same thing but I just attributed it to the pipes expanding from the heat now that it’s getting cold here in Indiana. Mine goes completly away when I drive. The dealership, however, told me when I had it in for something unrelated, that I’m about to be in serious need of a MAP-sensor. That’s about a $600.00 job I’m told.

it most likly has 1 pipe and a fancy mufler that has a split bult in to it or a y pipe sending the xzost to 2 muflers it could be pluged
stick a hanger up the hole to see if it is clear

sounds like you need a rear box

Nah they don’t plug up. Unless the cat fell apart inside. Just because your seeing white steam smoke out one pipe and not the other does not mean there is not a flow out of one of them. Take a towel and cover up the tip and press in to get a seal you will see the other pipe has fine flow. If not (unlikely) the exhaust will pressure up and make air pressure sounds and push against your hand. And if you hold hard tight enough the engine will stop running. Shaking is likely one or some of the exhaust supports has broken.

The second exhaust tip has a valve covering it, and it opens up after your RPMs exceed 2500 to allow better air flow. This allows the car to remain more quite when cruising along at slower speeds around town. It is possible to get the valve open all the time if you want a more aggressive tone. Check out the Golf Tee trick on youtube.
