I purchased some wheels for my car on ebay. They state that they manufacture wheels. I was told that in order for the rear wheels to fit properly, they would have to change the offset from a 40 offset to a 43 offset. Does this make sence to any one? Is it possible to do this to wheels already manufactured or could they do this when manufacturing the wheel?

they use spacers or adaptors and quite frankly that is NOT adviseable especially for a car that has cornering-performance capabilities.

if you have a BMW and are looking to enhance the rims (larger or better than stock you should be buying them from a company with a GUARANTEED FITMENT POLICY and that bolt directly onto the car – no spacers – no adapters.

perhaps like here
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/results.jsp?autoMake=BMW&autoModel=330Ci+Coupe&autoYear=2003&autoModClar=

you pay so much to have your car serviced, maintained, repaired, why would you consider going cheap and poorly fitting on aftermarket wheels?

Just bought a 1987 E28 BMW 5 series to take part in a charity rally and but it needs some new tyres as existing wheels are old metric ones and tyres are a fortune. So we have decided it is probably just better to replace the wheels and tyres together with a used set off ebay. Problem is though I am lead to believe that not all 5 stud wheels will fit, and not even all original BMW 5 stud wheels.

So i need some advice….. what wheels can i buy to fit?

Which model number BMW wheels can i buy to fit straight on?

The standard size was a 6×14 wheel with 195/70/14 tyres, I had one. Some of the wheels from the E34 will fit, but not the wider 15" ones, as you’ll run into arch clearance issues. Suggest you try one of the many BMW breakers yards you’ll find up & down the country, as they’ll always have wheels. Look at Google or Yellow Pages.

I have a BMW convertible, 2003 model. The hood does not automatically open or close, as I’ve been informed by the BMW local dealer that one of the hydraulic pipes is leaking, and they said they would repair it by installing a full new hydraulic kit for £2k! I want to know if there’s anywhere else in the midlands/UK where i could go to get it checked out / repaired, as £2k sounds like a rip off. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, another BMW main $tealer horror story!! Ok, first off don’t panic. Not many people know this but BMW main dealers are run as franchises. This means the owners decide on the price of labour. Now, BMW parts are charged according to BMW head office recommending retail price. This cannot be changed by the main $tealer. My advice would be to first call around a few BMW dealers asking for quotes. You’ll be surprised to find each will give you a different price! Simply go with the cheapest. If your still not happy with the price, simply enter "independant BMW – then the area you live in" into google abs try should be alot cheaper! Good luck!

0w-40w, 5w-50w, 20w-40w, many different answers from different mechanics, seems like they not even too sure in detail. Front number if 0w=for easy cold starts, then what’s 20w and the Back number 40w to 60w=thickness of oil or max temp range it will peak? Or is it the other way round?? Any clear answers, anyone?

A quick explanation.

The Society of Automotive Engineers developed a number system to grade an oil’s tendency to flow at different temperatures. In single grade oil like SAE 30, the number is a rating for how well the fluid flows at lower temperatures. In multi-grade oils (10W30) the first number refers to the same thing, the oils tendency to flow at colder temperatures, the lower the number, the lower the temperature it will flow easily at. The "W" does not mean "Weight", it stands for Winter. The second number is a rating for how well the oil will flow when heated up to aprox. 100C or 212F.

Now, about your old BMW. You’ll find as many different opinions as people who answer. My PERSONAL opinion is to repair the engine so it does not leak and then use the factory recommended oil grade. If you feel you need a little "something more", then use a bottle of Lucas Oil Treatment.

Good Luck

I have a stock M3 343 horse power. I need to know if i get a sport exhaust and a air filter, how much horse power will it give me?

With an aftermarket air filter on your car I seriously doubt you will get 15-20 (regardless of what the ads say….and if you get close to that gain, thats at the crank and so in terms of rwHP, where you will really notice it – will be minimal.

Now thats not to say if you want to increase your performance – they are needed.

HP gains are expensive and for your car considering stock rating at the crank is in the range of 330HP.

true meaningful gains will be headers (intandem with perf.
exhaust catbacks)
http://www.modacar.com/products/BMW/M3/MODAHEA/

ultimately if you want to seriously enhance your car, it will be via forced induction (supercharger or turbo).

there are bolt on installations available, low boost (requiring NO enhancements to your heads or internals). this will give you plus100hp gain when the supercharger is engaged……truly meaningful
http://www.vf-engineering.com/index.php?v=/kit_bmw_e46_m3.php
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii16X1UqJDs

cheers , engineer (owner – past & present of supercharged cars, fan of forced induction)

Im guessing the best exhaust for a BMW would be to get a aftermarket exhaust from a BMW tuning company like Hamann, Dinan, AC Schnitzer, Active Autowerke, Alpina, Meistershaft, or Hartge. Maybe even go for brands that only specializes in exhausts like GReddy, Stillen, Flowmaster, Magnaflow, or Borla. If I was you, I’d go with a BMW tuning company from Germany.
