John S asked:
this car is an old car but dont let the age fool you
most cars this age have 200k+ miles, this car has 93k
the thing is..a week or so ago..
my friend and i were just hanging out and were on the road and we decide to race this car..see how fast it goes.
i completely stepped on the pedal and the car went roaring
the only problem after that was..that the car started to buffer or jerk a bit everytime i stopped at a stop light and gave it a little acceleration after stopping.
that problem last for a week and then just suddenly, today.
im driving around with my friends and its raining like crazy and im following my friends and this cars not catching up to them..so i give it a little race and its not picking up the race..i step on it once again and its like its in neutral..the engine roars but the cars not going..
so i slowly just roll the car over to the nearest location and check it..
THE PROBLEM:
THE CAR GOES IN REVERSE..BUT WILL NOT MOVE FORWARD.
weird eh?
im willing to paypal anyone 20 bucks who can help me find out whats gone wrong with the car and what i need to do and maybe why it happened
DEAD SERIOUS.

Harrold D asked:
I have a 96 bmw 325i and what generallly happens is that my car will be going fine, until i hit traffic. When i get stuck in stop and go traffic my car would take a while to shift to second. It would rev to 4-5k then mayb shift, this wold cause my engine tempt to rise. Any ideas why this is happening?

My car, an automatic, didn’t seem to change into the 5th gear. I took it to Aamco this morning to have the transmission checked out, and I fully expected they would tell me I need to have my transmission repaired or replaced.
Instead, they said it’s the wheel bearing and that my transmission is just fine. My questions are:
1. How much will this cost me, ball park figure? My car is a 1997 BMW 528.
2. Is it possible that a wheel bearing can make the car feel and sound like it’s not changing gears?

I was wondering if it is worth it to put a Sports Exhaust on a BMW with Automatic transmission. Will it:
a) Still improve my cars performance, and
b) Will it sound good (i have heard that sports exhausts sound like rubbish on an auto)
the performance of an exhaust system is not dictated by the transmission. the sound and performance of an exhaust is related to the engine, regardless of transmission.
some people confuse this, because auto transmissions are typically programmed to shift at relatively low RPMs during normal driving. in this case, you typically won’t get the full benefit of the exhaust system. however, if you hold the accelerator down, even the auto transmissions will rev higher and give you the better sound and better utilize the increased exhaust flow capacity.
bottom line, the exhaust system’s performance is related to the engine, not the transmission. but different transmission types may require you to drive differently to get the engine revs up in order to gain the full benefit of a performance exhaust system.
