What is wrong with the exhaust (?) on my 1996 BMW 328i?

I don’t think it’s a dual exhaust but there are two tailpipes (side by side) and exhaust only flows from one of the pipes. The car is running okay but shakes a bit while standing and when not pressing the accelerator while moving.

Good stuff from Ryan here. My ‘95 325ci does the same thing but I just attributed it to the pipes expanding from the heat now that it’s getting cold here in Indiana. Mine goes completly away when I drive. The dealership, however, told me when I had it in for something unrelated, that I’m about to be in serious need of a MAP-sensor. That’s about a $600.00 job I’m told.

understeer has one, but id like something under $400

have you considered "making" your own exhaust? I have a 2000 M5, and I cut off all 4 mufflers, and replaced them with straight through magnaflow pipes, and it sounds beautiful! all in all it cost me about $200, for the 4 mufflers. I will also be replacing the stock catalytic converters to high flow magnaflow mufflers soon.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the 318 only has one muffler, so if you took that off, and replaced it with a magnaflow straight through muffler ($50-$60), you could really save some money, get a great sound, and add a little more "oomph" to your ride. On a dyno, I actually gained 6 HP to the rear wheels with these pipes…

i know nothing about exhaust and i really just want a good sound, and not to go spend a grand on all those pipes. and what do mufflers do or exhuast tips do they do anything, are they the same thing

Unless you are going racing, the best 328is exhaust is a stock exhaust by far. Exhaust tips are just that. Nice looking if properly installed and kept clean. No benefit to performance or sound. Custom mufflers may provide more sound, and a sometimes too much noise. Doubtful benefit to performance unless you can keep the engine speed above 6000 RPM continuously.
