What wheels will fit a 1987 E28 BMW 5 Series?

by Reed on December 12, 2009

Just bought a 1987 E28 BMW 5 series to take part in a charity rally and but it needs some new tyres as existing wheels are old metric ones and tyres are a fortune. So we have decided it is probably just better to replace the wheels and tyres together with a used set off ebay. Problem is though I am lead to believe that not all 5 stud wheels will fit, and not even all original BMW 5 stud wheels.

So i need some advice….. what wheels can i buy to fit?

Which model number BMW wheels can i buy to fit straight on?

The standard size was a 6×14 wheel with 195/70/14 tyres, I had one. Some of the wheels from the E34 will fit, but not the wider 15" ones, as you’ll run into arch clearance issues. Suggest you try one of the many BMW breakers yards you’ll find up & down the country, as they’ll always have wheels. Look at Google or Yellow Pages.

If my BMW has standard 16" factory wheels and I put brand new 18" alloys on them will I?

by Reed on December 12, 2009

If my BMW has standard 16" factory wheels and I put brand new 18" alloys on them will I have to also change the calipers and disk brakes all round?

I was reading in a book that chav’s always make the mistake of putting a fancy body kit and huge wheels but leaving on the tiny factory brakes?

I am not sure if this applies to a BMW, its not the latest one its just a 3 series. But I want to make sure I do it right.

Thanks.

Hi

No, you do not need to change your brakes, there’s no need as the callipers, pads and discs you have are not influenced by the size of the wheel.

The only reason you may want to change them is so that they look better, a purely cosmetic reason.

The bottom of the range current 3 Series in Europe is the 316i, it comes with 16 inch wheels, however, the 18 or 19 inch wheels can be specified from new without BMW making any changes to the brakes.

by Reed on December 12, 2009

I am going to buy a 1990 bmw 325i cherry color or dark red and I was wondering what kind of rims would best fit that kind of car and color. I would like to know the name or a link to the picture. Also do you guys know a website where you can find your kind of a car and then you choose the color of your car and then the rim type and you see how it looks on your car? Please give me a link if you know!!

Is it possible to put 17" wheels instead of the stock 16" wheels on a 2006 BMW 325i?

by Reed on December 12, 2009

I have a 2006 BMW 325i with the stock 16" aluminum wheels. Is it possible for me to put 17" wheels and tires in the well, or will that mess something up? I’m hoping to install some new chrome wheels, but I don’t know if that’ll be a problem. Can somebody please help me with this please? Thank you!

Yes, you can install 17 inch wheels on your 325i provided the wheels are Bona-fied BMW hub centering wheels with the correct width and offset. If you have the wheels available, it would be very wise to mount the new wheels as a trial on both the front and rear of your car to be sure there is adequate clearance for the tire, steering arms, and fender lip, especially in the front.
